The Borris Fair is On This Weekend!

THERE WILL be traffic restrictions in Borris this Sunday and Monday as a result of the annual Borris Fair which takes place on Monday next.

Sgt. Conor Egan of Bagenalstown Garda Station said there will be no through traffic through Borris on Sunday or Monday next and traffic diversions will be in place.

There will be two car parks in the town to cope with the fair day traffic, one at the top of the town at the Factory Cross and the second at the bottom of the town beside Borris Vocational School on the Rathanna Road close to the Viaduct.

He urged all patrons to exercise caution on the approach roads to avoid undue delay and said the public's cooperation would be greatly appreciated. The town will reopen to traffic on Tuesday next, August 16.

A spokesperson for Carlow County Council said 'the legal authority to hold a street fair in Borris is believed to derive from a 16th century charter granted by Queen Elizabeth 1.

'While Borris Fair takes place on August 15 each year, the preparations for holding the fair commence two months earlier.'  Carlow County Council in conjunction with An Garda Siochana has drafted a Traffic Management Plan, which is now in place and involves detours for heavy goods vehicles.  'Carlow County Council also provides an annual budget which covers the cost of implementing the Traffic Management Plan, the provision of security and the carrying out of street cleaning following the Fair.

'In 2011, the cleanup of the streets after Fair Day will take place on Tuesday August 16.'

Senator David Norris Withdraws His Irish Presidential Bid!

Senator David Norris withdrew his Irish Presidential Election Bid because of revelations about letters he sent to Israel in 1997 to get his friend freed.  Ben Earls, a commenter on the Irish Times website had the following to say about it:

"I believe that David Norris is a good person. I think the majority of Irish people know this. He has topped all the polls which says most of the Irish people would like him to be our president. We are not being given the chance.  Why? because of narrow minded people, politicians, people with a prejudice (even subconscious).

De Valera sent his sympathies to the Germans on Hitlers death. Yes our first President. A marked act of stupidity. Norris did something which was not even in the same realm. If this whole situation was not so outrageous it would belong in a tragic comedy."

That's right!  Eamon De Valera gave his sympathies to the German Ambassador because Adolf Hitler, the biggest mass murderer in the history of Europe, had passed away.  De Valera, a so called devout Catholic didn't seem to mind that Hitler had committed suicide after killing his wife and dog, 6 million Jews and millions more other Europeans including THOUSANDS OF IRISH PEOPLE.

If only we could get another Fianna Fail President like Eamon De Valera, life would be so much better for everyone.

David Norris's Presidential Campaign Nose Dives!

Irish Senator David Norris's Presidential Election Campaign is now in trouble as several key campaign aides have resigned following recent revelations about the Senator and his long time partner Ezra Yizhak Nawi from Israel.  In 1997 Ezra Nawi was convicted in Israel of statutory rape of a 15 year old Palestinian boy in 1992.

Senator Norris sent a letter to the Israeli Court asking for clemency and/or leniency in the sentencing of Ezra Nawi.  The letter was on Seanad Eireann stationery and Norris tried to argue that under Irish Law, Nawi wouldn't have been convicted and if he were convicted, he wouldn't be expected to serve a custodial sentence.  The letter is part character reference and part legal argument.

He is also in trouble over statements he reportedly made in Magill Magazine ten years ago.  The article in Magill magazine can be read here part 1  Part 2  Part 3.  Just zoom in to make the writing bigger and easier to read.  Norris disputes the remarks and says they were taken out of context.

Ireland will have come a long way from Dev if this guy is elected President of Ireland.

Australia Trove

I've added a new website link to a website called Australian Trove.  Check it out if you like.

Trove is a discovery experience focused on Australia and Australians. It supplements what search engines provide. If you are researching in the fields of the social sciences, literature, local or family history, or need inspiration for your school assignment, then this is the tool for you.

For example if researching images relating to Edmund Barton, our first Prime Minister, results will include descriptions such as people, book, manuscript, map and newspaper articles.

A researcher searching for information on Nellie Melba will be presented with a range of results including biographies, pictures, music, newspapers, books etc.

A ROYAL TOUR

Did you know that in England they call a pub crawl 'A Royal Tour'?  Half the pubs in England are named after Royalty, so if you were to go on a pub crawl, you might start out in the 'Prince of Wales' and then cross the road to the 'Duke of Edinburgh' and then go around the corner to the 'Queen Victoria' and then cross the bridge to the 'Duke of York' and then go across the park to the 'Prince Albert' and .......................

Finally, at the end of the night, when all the pubs are closed, you might go to a restaurant called the 'Empress of India' for a curry, before going home in a 'Royale Taxi' minicab.

Accountants and Engineers

Three accountants and three engineers are traveling by train to a conference. At the station, the three engineers each buy tickets and watch as the three accountants buy only a single ticket.  "How are three people going to travel on only one ticket?" asks an engineer.  "Watch and you'll see," answers an accountant.

They all board the train. The engineers take their respective seats but all three accountants cram into a rest room and close the door behind them. Shortly after the train has departed, the conductor comes around collecting tickets. He knocks on the rest room door and says, "Ticket, please."  The door opens just a crack and a single arm emerges with a ticket in hand. The conductor takes it and moves on.
The engineers saw this and agreed it was quite a clever idea.

So after the conference, the engineers decide to copy the accountants on the return trip and save some money (knowing that accountants are clever with money) . When they get to the station, they buy a single ticket for the return trip.  To their astonishment, the accountants don't buy a ticket at all.  "How are you going to travel without a ticket?" says one perplexed engineer. "Watch and you'll see," answers an accountant.

When they board the train, the three accountants cram into a rest room and the three engineers cram into another one nearby.  The train departs.
Shortly afterward, one of the accountants leaves his rest room and walks over to the rest room where the engineers are hiding.
He knocks on the door and says, "Ticket, please."

The Corporate Boat Race

An American automobile company and a Japanese auto company decided to have a competitive boat race on the Detroit River. Both teams practiced hard and long to reach their peak performance. On the big day, they were as ready as they could be.

The Japanese team won by a mile.

Afterwards, the American team became discouraged by the loss and their morale sagged. Corporate management decided that the reason for the crushing defeat had to be found. A Continuous Measurable Improvement Team of "Executives" was set up to investigate the problem and to recommend appropriate corrective action.

Their conclusion: The problem was that the Japanese team had 8 people rowing and 1 person steering, whereas the American team had 1 person rowing and 8 people steering. The American Corporate Steering Committee immediately hired a consulting firm to do a study on the management structure.

After some time and billions of dollars, the consulting firm concluded that "too many people were steering and not enough rowing." To prevent losing to the Japanese again next year, the management structure was changed to "4 Steering Managers, 3 Area Steering Managers, and 1 Staff Steering Manager" and a new performance system for the person rowing the boat to give more incentive to work harder and become a six sigma performer. "We must give him empowerment and enrichment." That ought to do it.

The next year the Japanese team won by two miles.

The American Corporation laid off the rower for poor performance, sold all of the paddles, cancelled all capital investments for new equipment, halted development of a new canoe, awarded high performance awards to the consulting firm, and distributed the money saved as bonuses to the senior executives.

NINITE - Software Installer and Updater

How Ninite Works

Ninite tries to behave exactly like a technical friend you’ve asked to install a few apps for you. This means that Ninite installers, regardless of when or where they were created:
  • Say “No” to toolbars or other junk
  • Always install the latest version of an app
  • Install the right 32-bit or 64-bit version for a PC
  • Install apps in the PC’s language
  • Skip apps that are already up-to-date
  • Upgrade an app if it’s out of date
We put a ton of effort into making sure Ninite just does the right thing and we think that’s a big reason why people like using it so much.

All the Details

When you make a Ninite installer at http://ninite.com/ you’re really making an entry in our database that records your app choices. This database entry is also associated with a random installer ID and, if you’re using Ninite Pro, your account.

Every Ninite installer you download is stamped with its installer ID. When you run an installer it asks our servers for the latest configuration info for its ID. This means Ninite installers always install the latest versions of apps, regardless of when they were created. It also means that Ninite installers need an internet connection to work. If you want to lock the version that gets installed or make a fully-offline installer we have a /freeze switch in Ninite Pro.

Once it gets the configuration info the installer checks for currently installed versions of the apps. Apps that are already up-to-date are skipped. This means you can run the same Ninite installer over and over again to keep apps current. If you need to repair an app that’s already installed you can force a reinstallation by clicking the retry/reinstall link at the top of a completed Ninite installer.

Now that Ninite knows which apps it’s installing on this PC it begins to download and install each one. Downloads and installations work through the list of apps independently, so as the first app is being installed the second and third may be completely downloaded. Ninite Pro has a download cache that often allows the download step to be skipped and lets Ninite Pro finish faster.

Downloads come from the publishers’ sites and are checked for correct digital signatures or matching SHA-1 hashes before Ninite uses them. Ninite automatically downloads and installs the proper 64-bit or 32-bit versions of apps. It also picks apps that match the PC’s language setting. These selections are done at runtime so the same Ninite .exe can install 64-bit Portuguese apps on one PC and 32-bit English ones on another.

After downloading an app’s installer and confirming its validity Ninite begins to install it. The specifics of this differ for each app but our most general technique is to hide the installer’s window when we run it and then automate the proper clicks and input to install the app right. Ninite’s automation says “No” to any toolbars or other junk just like if you asked a technical friend to install an app for you. Settings like installation location are left as their defaults.

And that’s how Ninite installs an app.

Dad's having a baby! TV Documentary

Logan and Greg could be two kids in any average American family. Except they have two dads and one of them is pregnant. Now, they are starting a new life in new town, in the US Bible Belt. How will their neighbours react to this extraordinary family?

This sensitive, intimate portrait from the makers of My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding, follows an ordinary family, raising children and seeking to bring new life into the world, while believing that prejudice can be overcome if only people would see them for who they are: a loving and protective family unit.

Tom and Scott Moore have been married for three years. Born as Jessica and Laura, they each came from traditional families. Now gay men, they met at the local Lesbian Gay Bi Transgender group and fell in love. Tom already had two adopted sons, Greg and Logan, who form the backbone of their family, along with two dogs, two cats, a turtle and a puffer fish.

Thirteen-year-old Greg has a form of autism called Aspergers syndrome. Eleven-year-old Logan has just started middle school.

Together, the Moores were blissfully happy as a family of four, but like most married couples, Scott and Tom still wanted to try for a baby. Unlike most male gay couples, they had the means to do so, as Scott still has working female reproductive organs. Biologically, getting pregnant is no different for him and he just needed a sperm donor. In fact, the biggest difficulty faced by a pregnant man is other people's judgement.  This documentary follows Scott's pregnancy and the safe delivery of his baby son, Miles.

Their lives continue to twist and turn when a freak fire, which burns down their house, forces them to relocate. They quit their jobs, pack up what is left of their possessions and drive their family 1,000 miles south to start a new life in New Mexico.

Now Greg and Logan have to adjust to new classmates, and the prospect of explaining their unusual family set-up to strangers, while Scott and Tom have to deal with the conservative views of their neighbours, many of whom think only women should have children. Despite all the pressures they face, will Scott and Tom decide to continue growing their family, and have another baby?

This is serious so why are you laughing?  No it's not an April Fools joke!  It's Real!

Find Out Who Rules and Owns The World

A few Interesting websites to checkout:

LittleSis is a free database detailing the connections between powerful people and organizations.

We bring transparency to influential social networks by tracking the key relationships of politicians, business leaders, lobbyists, financiers, and their affiliated institutions. We help answer questions such as:
  • Who do the wealthiest Americans donate their money to?
  • Where did White House officials work before they were appointed?
  • Which lobbyists are married to politicians, and who do they lobby for?
All of this information is public, but scattered. We bring it together in one place. Our data derives from government filings, news articles, and other reputable sources. Some data sets are updated automatically; the rest is filled in by our user community.

They Rule aims to provide a glimpse of some of the relationships of the US ruling class.
It takes as its focus the boards of some of the most powerful U.S. companies, which share many of the same directors. Some individuals sit on 5, 6 or 7 of the top 1000 companies. It allows users to browse through these interlocking directories and run searches on the boards and companies. A user can save a map of connections complete with their annotations and email links to these maps to others. They Rule is a starting point for research about these powerful individuals and corporations.

A few companies control much of the economy and oligopolies exert control in nearly every sector of the economy. The people who head up these companies swap on and off the boards from one company to another, and in and out of government committees and positions. These people run the most powerful institutions on the planet, and we have almost no say in who they are. This is not a conspiracy, they are proud to rule, yet these connections of power are not always visible to the public eye.

Karl Marx once called this ruling class a 'band of hostile brothers.' They stand against each other in the competitve struggle for the continued accumulation of their capital, but they stand together as a family supporting their interests in perpetuating the profit system as whole. Protecting this system can require the cover of a 'legitimate' force - and this is the role that is played by the state. An understanding of this system can not be gleaned from looking at the inter-personal relations of this class alone, but rather how they stand in relation to other classes in society. Hopefully They Rule will raise larger questions about the structure of our society and in whose benefit it is run.

Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO)

In 2008, Tokyo Electric, forced to shut the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant after an earthquake, posted its first loss in 28 years as oil and gas costs soared.

On August 29, 2002, the government of Japan revealed that TEPCO was guilty of false reporting in routine governmental inspection of its nuclear plants and systematic concealment of plant safety incidents. All seventeen of its boiling-water reactors were shut down for inspection as a result. TEPCO's chairman Hiroshi Araki, President Nobuya Minami, Vice-President Toshiaki Enomoto, as well as the advisers Shō Nasu and Gaishi Hiraiwa stepped-down by September 30, 2002.   The utility "eventually admitted to two hundred occasions over more than two decades between 1977 and 2002, involving the submission of false technical data to authorities".

Upon taking over leadership responsibilities, TEPCO's new president issued a public commitment that the company would take all the countermeasures necessary to prevent fraud and restore the nation's confidence. By the end of 2005, generation at suspended plants had been restarted, with government approval.

In 2007, however, the company announced to the public that an internal investigation had revealed a large number of unreported incidents. These included an unexpected unit criticality in 1978 and additional systematic false reporting, which had not been uncovered during the 2002 inquiry. Along with scandals at other Japanese electric companies, this failure to ensure corporate compliance resulted in strong public criticism of Japan's electric power industry and the nation's nuclear energy policy. Again, the company made no effort to identify those responsible.

DISHPOINTER

I have added a new link to a satellite dish pointing site which uses a mashup of Google Maps to show you which direction to point your dish when you are installing it.  It gives you the altitude/elevation angle, azimuth, LNB skew and the distance to your chosen satellite from your location.  There is even a few iphone and android apps on the site which can help you.  This can be used anywhere in the world.  The link is in the Home Entertainment section in the column on the left of this page or you can click on it here DISHPOINTER .  I cannot guarantee it's accuracy, but I assume it will work o.k.  One of the cool features is that it gives you the true azimuth which you have to know true North to use, but it also gives you the magenetic azimuth so you can use a compass to find magnetic North and then work out the direction to point your dish.  Knowing all this in advance makes it a hell of alot easier to set up your dish especially when you are up an extension ladder.

Isn't it against the law to employ underage minors as live-in employees in these great states?

Surely it must be against some law to run a child labo(u)r employment service for rich billionaires in these states?

Did you know......

that you can remove the region code restriction on your dvd player simply by typing in a four digit code on your dvd player remote control.  You can find the code for your dvd player by visiting the Videohelp.com website and entering the brand/manufacturer's name and model number in the search box.  Hopefully someone will have entered the code and instructions for your particular brand and model.  If not, try using a code for the same brand but a different model as manufacturers tend to use the same code across all their models.

Once you have the code, the procedure is usually very simple, you make sure the disc tray is empty and open, when the disc tray is open the dvd player is in programming mode, you then type in the code and press enter on the remote control, you then switch the dvd player off and on, you then put a dvd from another region in the disc tray and close it and then press play.  If the code has 'taken' then the dvd player should play the disc, if not then you have to start all over again, sometimes it can take 3 or 4 tries but once it works the change is permanent and you never have to do it again.

Region codes don't stop you from copying dvds, they only stop you from playing a dvd sold in one region in another region such as a disc sold in America being played in a European dvd player or vice versa.

Copy protection/prevention software such as macrovision is installed on the disc and in your dvd hardware and this is what stops you from making copies from a regular dvd player to a regular dvd recorder.  However it is pointless trying to disable this copy protection/prevention software on your dvd player so you can make a dvd copy.

You should use a computer to copy dvds because the movie dvds that are sold in shops are usually 8.4GB discs even if the movie size is less than this dvd disc size whereas the blank discs sold in shops are usually 4.7GB discs, so the movie will require compression to fit on the blank discs and most dvd recorders don't do compression, they just record from A to B so the blank disc has to be the same size as the original disc.
When you copy/rip on a computer the copy is usually compressed so that it will fit on the 4.7GB Discs.
