THERE WILL be traffic restrictions in Borris this Sunday and Monday as a result of the annual Borris Fair which takes place on Monday next.
Sgt. Conor Egan of Bagenalstown Garda Station said there will be no through traffic through Borris on Sunday or Monday next and traffic diversions will be in place.
There will be two car parks in the town to cope with the fair day traffic, one at the top of the town at the Factory Cross and the second at the bottom of the town beside Borris Vocational School on the Rathanna Road close to the Viaduct.
He urged all patrons to exercise caution on the approach roads to avoid undue delay and said the public's cooperation would be greatly appreciated. The town will reopen to traffic on Tuesday next, August 16.
A spokesperson for Carlow County Council said 'the legal authority to hold a street fair in Borris is believed to derive from a 16th century charter granted by Queen Elizabeth 1.
'While Borris Fair takes place on August 15 each year, the preparations for holding the fair commence two months earlier.' Carlow County Council in conjunction with An Garda Siochana has drafted a Traffic Management Plan, which is now in place and involves detours for heavy goods vehicles. 'Carlow County Council also provides an annual budget which covers the cost of implementing the Traffic Management Plan, the provision of security and the carrying out of street cleaning following the Fair.
'In 2011, the cleanup of the streets after Fair Day will take place on Tuesday August 16.'
