Do Volcanos Cause Harsh Winters?

The volcano eruption in Iceland earlier this year may be causing the current early winter weather in the home countries.  Check out this report in Discover Magazine that was reported on April 16th 2010.  Today BBC weather have forecast more snowfall across the U.K. and Ireland for later in the week starting Wednesday 15th Dec or Thursday 16th Dec.  This could turn out to be one of the worst winter seasons for decades and could last longer than anyone expects.

My advice is to stock up on:

1.  food, just in case stores cannot restock their shelves because roads are impassible for delivery lorries and remember, stores have low stocks to start with thanks to modern just-in-time ordering systems.

2.  bottled water, just in case pipes freeze.

3.  alternative heating and cooking sources such as portable gas fires and stoves.  If your electricity is knocked out by a winter storm your central heating won't work because it needs electricity for the pumps and even if you have a coal or oil fire system this will still be a problem.

4.  batteries for flashlights and radios and other devices.

5.  candles and matches.

6.  petrol, oil and anti-freeze for your car.

7.  lots of beer, just in case you get bored and thirsty.
