On 14 December 1831

The first clash of the Tithe War took place on 3 March 1831 in Graiguenamanagh, County Kilkenny when a force of 120 yeomanry tried to enforce seizure orders on cattle belonging to a Roman Catholic priest. Encouraged by his bishop, he had organised people to resist tithe collection by placing their stock under his ownership prior to sale.

The revolt soon spread. Shortly afterward, in Bunclody (Newtownbarry), County Wexford, people resisting the seizure of cattle were fired upon by the Irish Constabulary who killed twelve and wounded twenty. This massacre caused objectors to organise and use warnings such as church bells to signal the community to round up the cattle and stock.

On 14 December 1831, resisters used such warnings to ambush a detachment of 40 Constabulary at Carrickshock (County Kilkenny). Twelve constables, including the Chief Constable, were killed and more wounded.

The authorities reinforced selected army barracks fearing an escalation. Taking stock of the continuing resistance, in 1831 the authorities recorded 242 homicides, 1,179 robberies, 401 burglaries, 568 burnings, 280 cases of cattle-maiming, 161 assaults, 203 riots and 723 attacks on property directly attributed to seizure order enforcement.

In 1835 the conflict came to a head at Rathcormac, County Cork, when armed Constabulary, reinforced by the regular British Army reportedly killed 17 and wounded 30, in the course of enforcing a tithe order reputedly to the value of 40 shillings.

AN X-rated movie starring a Wexford hurler has won a top UK porn award.  Check out this article in the Irish Independent.

Do Volcanos Cause Harsh Winters?

The volcano eruption in Iceland earlier this year may be causing the current early winter weather in the home countries.  Check out this report in Discover Magazine that was reported on April 16th 2010.  Today BBC weather have forecast more snowfall across the U.K. and Ireland for later in the week starting Wednesday 15th Dec or Thursday 16th Dec.  This could turn out to be one of the worst winter seasons for decades and could last longer than anyone expects.

My advice is to stock up on:

1.  food, just in case stores cannot restock their shelves because roads are impassible for delivery lorries and remember, stores have low stocks to start with thanks to modern just-in-time ordering systems.

2.  bottled water, just in case pipes freeze.

3.  alternative heating and cooking sources such as portable gas fires and stoves.  If your electricity is knocked out by a winter storm your central heating won't work because it needs electricity for the pumps and even if you have a coal or oil fire system this will still be a problem.

4.  batteries for flashlights and radios and other devices.

5.  candles and matches.

6.  petrol, oil and anti-freeze for your car.

7.  lots of beer, just in case you get bored and thirsty.

I have now added two foreign exchange items to the bottom of the page.

An American dollar exchange rate panel in the bottom left of the page lists how much several currencies are currently worth in the US Dollar.  This dollar panel includes a couple of currencies that no longer exist, but the way the Euro is going they might make a return.  Anyhow, I cannot remove these dead currencies from the panel.

A Foreign exchange currency converter panel is now in the bottom right of the page.  These rates are not updated by the minute, there is a delay, but I compared them to the rates posted on the BBC, and they were accurate and up to date.

The rates posted will be different from the exchange rates posted in banks, forex shops, travel agents, etc. which are usually tourist rates where they can be as much as 30 cents difference between the buy and sell prices.

The currency converter allows you to convert an existing currency into one of the dead European currencies such as the Punt or vice versa.  This is useful when you want to work out what an amount in an existing currency would have been worth in an old currency or vice versa.

If you click on the title in either panel you will open a website in another window, this website has more foreign exchange information.

HOOLIGANS VANDALISE HORSE! P.M. "DISGUSTED!"

HOOLIGANS VANDALISE HORSE!
Ladbrooks are giving odds of a million to one that the police will catch the culprits.  The Chief Constable has verified that the horse is a police horse known as 'Bobby'.  Mr. Ed and Shergar are among the witnesses being questioned by the police.  The police suspect that disgruntled students may be responsible for this act of cruelty and vandalism.  The President of the Students Union said that he was "too stoned to do an interview right now.....call me back tomorrow".  Last night Downing Street sources said that the Prime Minister was "disgusted and sickened" by what had occurred.  Buckingham Palace confirmed that Prince Philip's whereabouts are unknown.

Lynne Jones M.P. Expenses Claim

MPs' expenses: the most bizarre claims

£420 Lynne Jones (Lab, Birmingham Selly Oak) claimed for Farrow & Ball Toile Trellis wallpaper in April 2008, and also claimed £28.80 for a food mixer
Lynne Jones, 59, a former Birmingham city councillor who was a backbench far- Left Labour MP from 1992 to 2010, and was a leading member of the Socialist Campaign Group founded by supporters of Tony Benn.  She was a staunch opponent of the New Labour project, and threatened to stand against Gordon Brown to prevent him being elected unopposed as Labour leader.

Lynne Jones billed the taxpayer as part of a redecoration programme at her second home in London. She gave her Lambeth flat a £22,000 facelift, including £6,100 for a new bathroom, £600 towards the £1,300 cost of two Persian rugs and £518 for an LCD television.  The cost to the taxpayer would have been even greater if the parliamentary fees office had not refused to pay for other items deemed “excessive”, that included two limited edition etchings by the artist Phil Greenwood which cost a total of £725, and £1,105 of decorating work for which the bill was put in too late.

In January 2007 Miss Jones announced that she would not be standing at the next general election, but the refurbishment of her London flat carried on, with another £6,761 spent on renovations. Miss Jones claimed £5,074 for a painter and decorator. In addition she claimed for 11 rolls of block printed Farrow & Ball “St Antoine” wallpaper, at £63.99 per roll; eight rolls of Farrow & Ball Toile Trellis wallpaper at £52 per roll, and £71.50 for Farrow & Ball paint.

Miss Jones, who published details of her expenses on her website, said she had decorated her London home to a similar standard to her constituency home, often using the same brands, such as the Farrow & Ball wallpaper, which she regarded as being “in both the spirit and letter of the rules as I understood them”.

Many of the claims submitted by Miss Jones appear highly questionable in the light of rules set out in the parliamentary Green Book, which ban claims for any items which are “luxurious or premium grade” or work which “enhances” a property.

The mother of two also submitted invoices for £323 for two pictures, £1,298 for a bed from the Iron Bed Company, £600 for bookshelves and £878 for new floorboards.

An £815 bill for the replacement of two radiators was submitted twice and appeared to have been paid for twice. She said the old bathroom had been “tatty and unhygienic” and that she would contact the fees office to see if the plumbing bill had been paid twice.

Between 2004 and 2008 she claimed a total of £61,468 in second home allowances for her London flat, where the mortgage interest repayments in 2008 were just £314 per month.  She also said she would pay capital gains tax on any profit she made.

WHAT A FUCKING BITCH!!!

Lynne Jones
Job: backbench Labour MP for Birmingham Selly Oak  1992-2010, Former Focus/Copec Housing Official
Salary: £64,766
Total second home claims:
2004-05: £16,319
2005-06: £17,576
2006-07: £14,045
2007-08: £13,528

Hi Folks!  Videos and cartoons are now in a dark grey panel at the bottom of this blog page.  You can watch the YouTube videos in full screen, all you have to do is click on the four arrows in the bottom right hand corner of the YouTube player.  It's probably best to watch the "Hitler plans to save Ireland" video in full screen so that you can read the subtitles. Enjoy!

Catholic Coffee

Four Catholic men and a Catholic woman were having coffee.

The first Catholic man tells his friends, "My son is a priest, when he
walks into a room, everyone calls him 'Father'."

The second Catholic man chirps, "My son is a Bishop. When he walks into a
room people call him 'Your Grace'."

The third Catholic gent says, "My son is a Cardinal. When he enters a
room everyone says 'Your Eminence'."

The fourth Catholic man then says, "My son is the Pope. When he walks
into a room people call him 'Your Holiness'."

Since the lone Catholic woman was sipping her coffee in silence, the four
men give her a subtle, "Well....?"
She proudly replies, "I have a daughter,

slim,

tall,

38D breast,

24" waist and

34" hips.

When she walks into a room, people say, "Oh My God."
.

I found this story buried in the Los Angeles Times.

An auctioneer in America is selling President Kennedy's assassin Lee Harvey Oswald's coffin.  I wonder where they dug that up?

Stuart Pearson - Old News But Still Funny!

It was two years ago this month that Graiguenamanagh Sweet Shop Owner Stuart Pearson tried to take over Aer Lingus.  This was after he tried to take over a bankrupt Northern Ireland property developer in October 2008.  In one of the linked stories, he claimed that Wall Street investment firm Drexel Burnham Lambert were involved in the Aer Lingus deal, which was surprising considering they went out of business in 1990.  This picture of him is from an article in the Wicklow People.

Seagate 2TB Hard Drives

I know I have recommended Seagate hard drives in the past as I have a couple of them myself and I have had no problems with them.  However, I would avoid buying any Seagate 2TB Hard Drives as they are getting a bad rap/rep on the internet at the moment.  I was in a Maplin electronics store the other day and I overheard a guy returning one, he said it was making clicking noises, seized up and stopped working.  That is the same complaint as most of the complaints on hardware review and shopping websites.  It probably explains why Maplin has reduced them from £119.99 to £99.99.

Tip of the Day

Did you know that if you hold down the "Alt" key and press the "Tab" key, you can easily switch between the windows or applications you have open on your computer?  This can be very useful when you are in "F11" full screen mode. Try it now.  By the way, "Tab" is short for Tabulator.

Property Search

I have included a new Property Search section in the left column.
MyHome.ie is for searching for Irish properties that are available for sale or rent. Rightmove is for searching for English properties that are available for sale or rent. You can also check for sold house prices.

I moved RIP.ie from Useful Links to Property Search. According to property experts, one way to find new properties that might be coming unto the market is to read the death notices in the local newspapers and then contact the widow or family of the bereaved to find out if they are selling.
RIP.ie publishes the death notices before the local newspapers, so now you have the jump on the newspaper readers.

RIP.ie does not always show the widow's or bereaved family's home address or phone number, so just contact them at the funeral home.
Try to be tactful when you call, remember, it is a sensitive time for them. Oh yeah, when you call the funeral home, reverse the charges, it saves money.

Did you know that in Internet Explorer, if you hold down the "Alt" key and press the left arrow key, you can go back to the web page, you were previously looking at?  If you hold down the "Alt" key and press the right arrow key, you can go forward again.  This can be very useful when you are in "F11" full screen mode.  Try it now.  By the way, "Alt" is short for Alternate.

Tip of the Day

Did you know that if you press function key "F11" (it is in the top row of keys) in Internet Explorer, the web page you are looking at, will go full screen? Press "F11" again to get out of full screen. Try it now.

It's a kind of Kindle! It's a kind of Kindle! Sing it again!

Did you know that you do not have to buy a Kindle to view Kindle e-books? Amazon have an application called "Kindle for PC" which allows you to view their Kindle e-books on your netbook, notebook or desktop pc, and the best thing about it is, it's FREE!

You can download it from here: Kindle for PC. You have to register in order to be able to download it and of course so that you can get the books from Amazon's website. I just used a false name, address, phone number and e-mail address. Unusually, they did not require me to verify anything by emailing me a code to enter or asking for a credit card, etc. However, if I wanted to buy a book, I would then have to enter some proper information such as credit card details, etc.

What's good news is that you don't have to buy any books because Amazon have thousands of free books to download, just follow this link to find them: Amazon Free Kindle E-Books. Such gobshites as Charles Dickens, Jack London, William Shakespeare, Anthony Trollope, Mark Twain, Honoré de Balzac, Karl Marx, Emile Zola, and others wrote these books.

Now, some of you may not like reading books on your computer, because staring at the screen too long, hurts your little eyeballs. Don't worry, because the app has a feature that allows you to reverse the screen from black type on a white background to white type on a black background, so it is easier on the eyes. It is even better than a Kindle because you can read it in the dark. Once you installed the app and downloaded a free book, go into VIEW on the menu bar, click on color and select black and it will change the screen..........simples!

In addition, Amazon has other Kindle apps for Macs, I-Pads, I-Phones and Android Phones, so if you have any of those gadgets, you can go wild reading books on them.
